PREbiotics

As we discussed last time, probiotics are live bacteria found in certain foods and supplements. There’s lots of benefits to taking probiotics. You can read more on probiotics here.

Prebiotics are substances that come from carbohydrates that humans can’t digest, known as fiber. The good bacteria in your gut eat this fiber.

The gut bacteria have many important functions in the body. The good bacteria in your digestive tract helps to protect your body from harmful bacteria and fungi. They also aid in keeping your immune system in check.

Foods high in prebiotic fiber include:

  • Legumes, beans and peas
  • Oats
  • Bananas and berries
  • Asparagus, dandelion greens, garlic, leeks and onions

Check out one of our team’s favorite recipes using leeks as a prebiotic fiber. It would make a great holiday dish, but who says you can’t make it year round?

Eating balanced amounts of both pro- and prebiotics can help ensure that you have the right balance of these bacteria, which should improve your health.
